The terrain

A farm economy that lives under the monsoon

India farms in the shadow of the rains: about 48 per cent of its cultivated area has no irrigation and depends entirely on the monsoon. The land is worked in small, fragmented holdings averaging just 1.08 hectares, and 86 per cent of its farmers are small or marginal. Yet this patchwork delivers — food grain production crossed 330 million tonnes in 2024–25, and India stands among the world's major exporters of rice, spices and marine products.

The seasons

Three harvests, one calendar

The Indian farming year turns in three seasons. Kharif rides the monsoon from June to October, carrying rice, jowar, bajra, maize, cotton, jute, groundnut and soybean. Rabi takes the cool winter from October to March with wheat, barley, gram, mustard, peas and linseed. Between them, the short summer Zaid season from March to June squeezes in watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, moong and urad.

The staples

Rice and wheat — the two pillars of the plate

Rice rules the wet country: it wants more than 100 cm of rain or irrigation and temperatures of 22–32 °C, and its heartlands run through West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. India is the world's second largest producer of rice — and its largest exporter. Wheat is the winter twin: it asks for a cool growing season with bright sunshine at harvest, and just five states — Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh — grow 85 per cent of it.

Millets and pulses — where the rain runs short

Where the rain thins out, the drought-resistant crops take over. India is the largest producer of millets in the world — bajra, jowar and ragi thrive in the dry stretches of Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Karnataka. In pulses, India is both the largest producer and the largest consumer, and the crop pays the soil back by fixing nitrogen; Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh lead. Maize, needing 21–27 °C and moderate rainfall, rounds out the grain map through Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.

The Money Crops

Fibre and sugar

Sugarcane, cotton and the golden fibre

The cash economy begins in the cane fields: India is the second largest sugarcane producer after Brazil, with Uttar Pradesh alone growing more than half, on a crop that wants 21–27 °C and 75–100 cm of rain. Cotton commands the largest area in the world here — it demands black soil and 210 frost-free days, and since 2002 it has been transformed by Bt Cotton across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab. Jute, the 'Golden Fibre' of the warm, humid alluvial plains, is an Indian monopoly in the making — West Bengal grows 70 per cent of the world's largest crop.

Tea on the slopes, coffee in the valleys, rubber in the south

Climb the well-drained slopes with their acidic soils and you reach the tea gardens — India is the second largest producer after China, with Assam the biggest grower and Darjeeling in West Bengal the most famous name. Coffee lives further south: India ranks sixth globally, Karnataka grows 71 per cent, and Andhra Pradesh's own Araku Valley coffee carries a GI tag. At the wet equatorial tip, Kerala grows 91 per cent of India's rubber on more than 200 cm of rainfall.

Four oilseeds, four corners of the country

The oilseed map splits the country into quarters. Groundnut belongs to Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan; mustard and rapeseed paint the northern winter across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. Soybean concentrates in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, while the coconut belt hugs the southern coast through Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The Revolutions

The turning point1966 CE

The Green Revolution — from ship-to-mouth to surplus

In 1966–67, India bet its future on science. High-yielding variety seeds — Kalyan Sona and Sonalika for wheat — arrived with chemical fertilizers and irrigation, and Punjab became the first proving ground. Wheat output jumped from 12 million tonnes in 1965 to over 20 million by 1970, and a food-deficit nation became food self-sufficient under the architecture of M.S. Swaminathan. The triumph had costs that examiners love: the gains stayed largely with wheat and rice in the Punjab–Haryana belt, while the soil degraded and the groundwater sank.

White, Blue, Yellow, Golden — the revolutions multiply

In 1970, Operation Flood did for milk what the Green Revolution had done for grain. Built on the Amul cooperative model under Dr. Verghese Kurien, the White Revolution made India the largest milk producer in the world, pouring roughly 22 per cent of global milk. The palette kept growing: the Blue Revolution raised fish and aquaculture under Arun Krishnan, the Yellow Revolution pushed oilseeds under Sam Pitroda, and the Golden Revolution turned fruits and horticulture into a growth story under Nirpakh Tutej.

The lifelines

Canals, wells and tanks — watering half a country

Only about 48 to 52 per cent of India's cultivated area is irrigated; the rest waits on the sky. Canals are the most widespread source, tube wells and bore wells are the fastest growing, and tanks still matter across the south. Where water runs scarce, drip irrigation is the efficient answer — promoted hardest in Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.

The ledger of land

Where every hectare goes

India's land ledger reads like a budget. Nearly half the country — 46 per cent — is net sown area under the plough, while forests hold 23 per cent. The remainder scatters into fallow land at 8 per cent, non-agricultural uses at 9 per cent, and barren or waste land at 7 per cent. That 46 per cent figure is one of the most quoted numbers in the exam hall.

The deltas

Why Andhra Pradesh is the Rice Bowl of India

The journey ends where the Krishna and Godavari meet the sea. West Godavari, East Godavari and Krishna districts earn Andhra Pradesh its title — the 'Rice Bowl of India' — with paddy standing on more than 22 lakh hectares, and paddy, maize and cotton together covering 75 per cent of the state's cropped area. The deltas drink from major canal systems off the Krishna and Godavari, while Rayalaseema leans on its tanks. Cotton spreads through Kurnool, Guntur and Prakasam, and the Guntur–Prakasam belt grows the Virginia flue-cured tobacco that makes up about 40 per cent of India's total.

Chillies, shrimp and a GI-tagged coffee

Andhra Pradesh holds a hand of aces no other state can match. Guntur is the 'Chilli Capital of India', running the largest chilli market in Asia. The state is India's largest aquaculture producer, its shrimp farms concentrated in Nellore and Krishna, and India in turn is the world's largest producer of chillies, eggs and aquaculture products — AP leads in all three. Add the GI-tagged Araku Valley coffee, oil palm rising along the coast, and the famous Banganapalli mango of Kurnool, and the bowl is full.
